Suleiman Denies Meddling in Elections

President Michel Suleiman has reportedly denied remarks by Marada Movement leader Suleiman Franjieh about meddling in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The Central News Agency (CAN) quoted well-informed political sources as saying that Suleiman has expressed "dismay" over opposition attacks, accusing him of interfering in the elections.

The latest harassment came from Franjieh who accused President Suleiman of sticking his nose in the June 7 polls.

Franjieh charged that Suleiman has dispatched "more than once" head of the General Security Maj. Gen. Wafiq Jezzini to meet with him in an effort to obtain a share in Kesrouan, Jbeil and Metn districts.

The sources told CAN that President Suleiman "did not assign anyone to make contact with anybody."

They said contacts which took place or will take place were "initiated by individuals and not upon the President”s instructions."
