Restoring president”s powers needs consensus
Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said Thursday that reconsidering the president”s role and authorities was an issue that had been "proposed a long time ago," after the president was stripped of many of his powers and his position became "useless." He told the Voice of Lebanon radio station that the issue cannot be addressed without national consensus.
Najjar said some parties call for strengthening the powers of the president, but then they launch attacks against him, "as if the president should not play any role in the country”s political life." He said he expected the Cabinet to be close to reaching an agreement on the pending administrative appointments and on assigning the five remaining members of the Constitutional Council.
