A diplomatic source at the UN told the Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbal that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will submit his report on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on February 29.
The source noted that the report will discuss the role and activities of UNIFIL in South Lebanon, the threats and aggressions against it, security and safety measures it has undertaken, and its cooperation with the Lebanese army according to the resolution’s framework.
The report is also expected to discuss the UN’s support of the Lebanese government and its efforts to implement the clauses of Resolution 1701 along the border with Israel.
“The report will also call to keep up efforts to monitor arms smuggling through the border, it will confirm that the Shebaa Farms is Lebanese property, and it will stress on the liberation of detainees held by Israel and Hezbollah,” the source told the daily.
The source also noted that the report calls on all influential parties in Lebanon and abroad to ensure a total
ceasefire, especially through the implementation of Section 8 of Resolution 1701.
The report will also mention the Qatari contingent’s withdrawal from UNIFIL.
