Former MP Soueid: We refuse Nasrallah’s “war on the stars”
In an exclusive phone interview with nowlebanon.com, General Secretariat Coordinator of the March 14 forces former MP Fares Soueid said that “the revolution of independence, which began with the assassination attempt on Marwan Hamadeh’s life and continued to the murder of Wissam Eid, demands justice through the Special Tribunal.”
Leader of the Free Patriotic Movement and active member of the Lebanese opposition MP General Michel Aoun, Soueid continued, “who was commander of the Lebanese Army, who was a prominent candidate for the presidency and one of the leaders of Christians, is suddenly demanding revenge. How can we build a state of law and justice when a political figure of this magnitude is calling for the application of the law of the jungle and the principle of revenge, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”
“It would have been better for Aoun to ask for an Arab and Muslim tribunal, or perhaps international commission of inquiry into the Imad Mugniyah assassination. But Aoun calling for revenge of Imad Mugniyah’s assassination comes as a surprises, especially since this is a tribal tradition. So how could someone who ‘was’ a Christian leader call for this theory? ”
Soueid added, “The March 8 team, which is represented by General Aoun at the quadripartite meeting, should be aware that what was pre-February 14 will not remain post-February 14.”
Commenting on the rumors of Syria’s readiness to facilitate the election of a Lebanese President at the Arab summit in Damascus, and then possibly attempting to obstruct the formation of a Cabinet, Soueid said that the candidate for the Lebanese presidency was currently Army Commander General Michel Sleiman. Should Sleiman be elected, Soueid analyzed, the result would be a void in the position of Army Commander. The Cabinet would then have to designate a new commander. “We would have won a President of the Republic but placed our army in the threshold of the unknown, and we also say to the Syrians that post-February 14 is not the same as what was before. ”
As for the request of the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry that its nationals avoid travel to Lebanon, Soueid commented, “(Secretary General of Hezbollah Sayyed) Hassan Nasrallah announced a “war on the stars” and on the world, and Saudi Arabia is part of this world and will take precautions. Nasrallah, like Aoun, also seeks an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But he cannot apply this in the south because of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, and he is unable to use arms inside of Lebanon as the events in Basta and Choueifat and Ain el-Remmaneh have revealed his abilities.”
“If any party in Lebanon wants to give Hassan Nasrallah political immunity in his “war on the stars,” then they should say so clearly. As for us, we refuse,” Soueid concluded.
