Assumption Day marked with masses across country
Holy masses were held over the weekend all across the country to mark Assumption Day celebrated on August 15. For the occasion, a mass and dinner were held in the Chouf village of Mukhtara and was attended by Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) head Walid Jumblatt and Minister of the Displaced Nehme Tohme and an array of political and religious figures.
Tohme called for the residents of the Chouf region, which has witnessed sectarian carnages during Lebanon’s 1975-90 Civil War, to unite and work toward civil piece. “Walid Jumblatt and Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir are both working to protect Lebanon and no political intimidation can jeopardize reconciliations,” he said. The Assumption of Mary is the traditional belief held by Christians that the Virgin Mary at the end of her life was physically taken up into heaven. Celebrations we also held in the south Lebanon qada of Hasbaya where the Orthodox Bishop of Tyre, Sidon and Marjayoun Elias Kfoury led prayers.
