23 نيسان: القديس جرجس أو مار جرجس (280-303م) ويسمى أيضاً جاورجيوس أو جريس أو جورج وجرجة. هو قديس حسب معظم الكنائس الشرقية والغربية وهو احد المساعدين المقدسين الأربعة عشر حسب التقاليد الكاثوليكية. يحتفل به يوم 23 نيسان من كل عام. ومعنى اسمه الزارع أو الفلاّح.
ويعتبر القديس جرجس شفيع مدينة بيروت عاصمة لبنان، ويسمى الخليج التي تجثم عليه المدينة بخليج مار جرجس، كما وأن هناك كنائس عديدة باسمه، ويقال ان القديس جرجس ذبح التنين قرب البحر في بيروت.
كما يعتبر القديس جرجس شفيعاً لعدد من الدول والمدن والحركة الكشفية كما للعديد من المهن والمنظمات والمرضى، وهو يحظى بإجلال المسلمين الذين يطلقون عليه لقب “الخضر”.
April 23rd: Saint George (280-303 AD), is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic Church (Latin and Eastern), Anglican, Orthodox, East Syrian, and Miaphysite Churches. He is immortalized in the myth of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial, Saint George’s Day, is traditionally celebrated on April 23rd, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints.
Many patronages of Saint George exist around the world, including countries and cities as well as the Scout Movement, in addition to a wide range of professions, organizations, and disease sufferers. He is known and respected by Muslims, who identify him by the name “Al-Khodr”.
He is the patron saint of the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, & the gulf on which the city if perched is called the Saint George Gulf, for he is said to have killed a dragon near the sea in Beirut.
