U.S.: Cabinet Formation is Purely Lebanese, All Sides Should Respect Poll Results
The U.S. welcomed Premier-designate Saad Hariri”s resumption of parliamentary consultations aimed at forming a government which Washington described as purely Lebanese.
In an interview with Sawa radio station, Spokesman for the State Department”s Near Eastern Affairs Department John Sullivan also hoped that Hariri would be able to form a cabinet soon.
Asked about Syrian rejection of a Turkish mediation to solve the Lebanese cabinet crisis, Sullivan said: "The issue of cabinet formation in Lebanon is for the Lebanese to solve without any foreign interference."
He said the Obama administration expects from all parties to respect the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections that resulted in a majority that is clearly committed to Lebanon”s independence.
Sullivan told Sawa that Washington is willing to work with the next cabinet which should abide by peace and implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
