U.S. for Lebanese Cabinet that Mirrors Election Results
The U.S. administration”s position is that "it is with the formation of a (Lebanon) government based on the results of parliamentary elections," the daily As-Safir said in a report from Washington.
It quoted its Washington correspondent Joe Maakaroun as saying that U.S. State Department officials reiterate that they have no objection to a government based on the 15-10-5 formula so long as the majority March 14 forces approve the deal.
Maakaroun quoted Syrian sources in Washington as saying that Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad has informed U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman during a meeting between the two men in the U.S. capital that "Syria will not interfere in the details of the formation of the Lebanese government."
"Our only concern is that the Opposition is not being targeted," Miqdad reportedly told Feltman.
